How do I…?
Tagging, Rating and Custom Fields
Filters, search, and smart collections can only work with what Skagway knows about a clip, and a filename tells it very little. Stars and tags on a Grid or Storyboard card, and the same fields in the Inspector, are something you can filter, search, and sort by later. A few minutes of tagging now saves scrolling through the whole library next time.
Rate and tag in the Inspector
On Grid and Storyboard, the card is enough for a star or a tag. Open the Inspector (⌘I) when you want the suggestions, a new tag, or a rename. Whatever you set in the Inspector applies to the focused clip, or to every clip in the batch selection. To make one, see Build a selection (work on videos together).
- On a Grid or Storyboard card, click a star to rate that clip, or click a tag to remove it. If the card is selected, every selected video changes. If it is not, only that clip changes. Option-click a star or a tag to filter instead.
- Press 1–5 to rate the Inspector’s current target, or 0 to clear it. Edit → Rating does the same.
- Under TAGS, click a suggestion in From the name, or click Add tags and choose a tag. To make a new tag, type its name in New tag and press Return.
- Click a tag chip to remove that tag from the current target. Right-click a tag and choose Rename Tag… or Delete Tag to change it for the whole library.
- To rate or tag many clips at once from the Inspector, select them first with ⌘-click, or press ⌘A for everything in the view. The bar turns orange, and whatever you set goes onto every selected clip.
Ratings, tags, and batch edits are covered in full on the Organize page. See Organize.
Add your own fields
Tags and stars cover most needs. Add a custom field when you want to record something specific, such as a location, a shoot date, or whether a clip has been delivered.
- Open Settings → Custom Metadata and create a field. Give it a name and a type: String, Text, Number, Date, Date & Time, or Boolean.
- Focus a clip and fill in the value under CUSTOM in the Inspector. The control matches the field’s type.
- The field shows up in search, the Sort menu, List columns, and the filters, so you can find clips by it later.
Custom fields are set up in Settings. See Custom Metadata.
