Hide / Show Inspector

Hide the Inspector when you want the library wall to use the full window. Show it when you want to read or edit the focused clip.

1. Press ⌘I, choose View → Inspector, or click the Inspector button in the toolbar. The same command hides the pane and shows it again.
2. Showing the pane restores the width you last dragged. The focused clip stays in the same place on screen. The wall does not jump.
3. Compact playback docks into the Inspector preview, so it needs the pane visible. While the Inspector is hidden, Compact is unavailable and the player stays Windowed. Show the Inspector and Compact is available again.
4. With two or more clips selected, click the “N videos selected” pill to show the Inspector on the orange batch bar.

Title (display name)

1. Title is the name used for sorting, the List layout, and search. It can differ from the file name on disk. The file name and the path are listed under the Title.
2. Focus one video and press Return, or right-click → Edit Title…, and edit the name. Press Esc to cancel.
3. Rename File… is the command that changes the name on disk. Editing Title leaves the file name as it is. Renaming the file leaves Title as it is.

Subtitles

1. In the Inspector, open the Subtitles menu and choose the value that matches this video. The badge on the card, and subtitle filters, follow that setting.
2. None means the video is not marked as captioned.
3. A sidecar .srt beside the file can be picked up from the file name. For the names that match, see Playback. After you add subtitle files, choose File → Scan for Subtitles.

Rate videos

1. On a Grid or Storyboard card, click a star to set that rating. Click the same star again to clear it. If the card is selected, every selected video gets that rating. If it is not, only that clip changes.
2. Press 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 to rate the Inspector’s current target, or 0 to clear it. Edit → Rating does the same: None, or 1 Star through 5 Stars. Typing in a text field still gets the digits.
3. In the Inspector, under RATING, click a star. That rates the orange selection, or the one clip on the light blue bar.
4. Option-click a star on a card to show that rating and every higher one. Option-click the same star again to clear. A pill names the filter, for example Rating 4+.
5. In the List layout, with the Rating column on, click the stars in the row. That rates the video on that row.

Tag videos

Grid and Storyboard cards show tags on the wall. The Inspector’s TAGS section shows the tags on its current target: every selected clip on the orange bar, or one clip on the light blue bar.

1. A card shows at most three tags on one row, or fewer when the names do not fit, then a count for the rest. Click a tag to remove it. If that card is selected, the tag comes off every selected video. If it is not, only that clip changes.
2. Option-click a tag to show only clips with it, and Option-click it again to clear. The pill names that tag.
3. Rest the pointer on the card and click the tag icon. The panel lists the library’s tags, a From the name group taken from the file name and folder name, and a New tag field. Nothing is applied until you click a chip or press Return. Nothing is uploaded.
4. In the Inspector, assigned tags are the chips at the top of TAGS. Click a chip to unassign it from the current target. From the name, just under those chips, offers the same suggestions. Click one to add it.
5. Click Add tags to open the rest of your tags. The row includes a count, such as Add tags (8). Click a tag in that list to assign it.
6. Type a name in the New tag field and press Return to create the tag and assign it. New Tag does the same.
7. Right-click a tag in the Inspector and choose Rename Tag… or Delete Tag. Delete asks first, then takes the tag off every video. A click still only takes the tag off the current target. The Quick Filter drawer’s Tags card has the same right-click commands.

Custom metadata

1. Open Settings → Custom Metadata. Create a field with a name and a type: String, Text, Number, Date, Date & Time, or Boolean.
2. Edit the value in the Inspector under CUSTOM. The control follows the field’s type.
3. The field is then available in search, the Sort menu, List columns, Quick Filter and Advanced Filter, smart collections, and Export Metadata….

Edit many at once

Select the clips first, then edit once. The orange bar means the edit hits every selected clip. The light blue bar means you are looking at one of them.

1. Select two or more clips with ⌘-click, ⇧-click, A, or ⌘A. The Inspector shows an orange bar labeled N Videos Selected.
2. Arrow through the view and press A on keepers. Earlier checkmarks stay. Focus moves; the set does not.
3. Click one selected clip to inspect it alone. The bar turns light blue and shows that clip’s name. Click the same focused clip again, click N Videos on the light blue bar, or click the “N videos selected” pill, to edit the selection again.
4. Set a rating, a tag, or a custom value while the orange bar is up. Skagway writes that value onto every selected video. On the wall, rating or tagging a selected card does the same, even while the light blue bar is showing one clip. Rating or tagging a card that is not selected changes only that card.
5. When the selected videos disagree, the field shows Multiple values. Setting a value replaces Multiple values on every clip in the selection.
6. Click Clear on the orange bar, click the pill’s ✕, or press ⇧⌘A, to clear the selection.

In Storyboard, clicks on the collage frames focus or play. Use the title or footer under the collage, or N Videos in the Inspector, to switch batch inspect. See Browse.
